Designing in Accordance with the Pitt Review

The Pitt review identified the need to enhance how we model and test drainage networks. This is in line with other regulatory requirements where emphasis for approval and regulatory scrutiny is rapidly shifting towards risk assessment, rather than simply testing for failure. Moreover, flooding at nodes is no longer the primary concern - it is where the water goes that is determining the destiny of both proposed developments and how existing developments are to be managed.

“The role of science and engineering is crucial in understanding flood risk, and this role will become even more significant as we look to adapt to the increased risk that climate change will bring. The summer 2007 floods demonstrated that the UK has come a long way in terms of weather forecasting and flood prediction, but it also highlighted that there are considerable improvements to be made – especially in terms of surface water flooding and multiple flood events (Pitt Review 2008:39).”
